A disgusted Delta Air Lines passenger says he was forced to sit in a seat covered with dog feces left by a service animal on a previous flight.
Matthew Meehan said he boarded an Atlanta-to-Miami jetliner last week and discovered that his chair, and others, was coated in fecal matter. “It was all over my legs, shoes, ankles … and all they gave me to clean myself was two paper towels and a mini bottle of gin,” he wrote on Facebook in a post that has gone viral.
When he complained to a crew member, Meehan said he was told it “wasn’t her problem if the the cleaning crew didn’t clean it” and he “could either sit in it or stay behind.”
Delta issued an apology Tuesday, saying the mess had been left by a sick service animal.
“On Nov. 1, an aircraft operating flight 1949 from Atlanta to Miami was boarded before cleaning was completed following an incident from a previous flight with an ill service animal.
“Delta apologizes to customers impacted by the incident and has reached out to make it right, offering a refund and additional compensation,” the carrier said.
“The safety and health of our customers and employees is our top priority, and we are conducting a full investigation while following up with the right teams to prevent this from happening again.
“Upon landing in Miami, the aircraft was taken out of service to be deep cleaned and disinfected,” the statement said.
Meehan said he was offered a refund and 50,000 flight miles, but he remains outraged and disgusted at having sit in filth that he covered him in “sickness and disease,” he wrote.
He also posted photographs to Facebook showing his soiled shoes and said he was told to disinfect himself with the drinking alcohol.
